Our Beginnings
In 1988, Rita Rauchwerger and five other cancer patients searching for a support group, formed a chapter of IACVF (International Association of Cancer Victors and Friends) in Miami, FL. Rita accepted the position of president of the local chapter. They met once a month, shared experiences and concerns and built a growing network of health resources and information. After 3 years, many members felt a need to be more vocal and aggressively pursue knowledge about alternative healing methods. Rita, along with 82 other members, broke away from IACVF and formed PATH - Positive Alternative Therapies in Healthcare.. PATH continued with monthly meetings, sought out the best alternative healthcare practitioners to address crucial topics at the meetings, offered literature on various healing modalities and provided support and the opportunity for networking. Over the years, so much information was gathered and shared that PATH expanded to cover other chronic diseases, not only cancer.
Rita remained as PATH President for 13 years before turning over the office to Dr. David Newman. She was honored by the Board of Directors with the title of Founding President Emeritus. Dr. Newman served for one term and was followed by our current president, Dr. Steven N. Green. Rita continued to be a moving force in PATH serving as Treasurer until she recently was taken ill. Rita passed away on November 30, 2006 at the vital age of 85 with her son and daughter at her side.
It is said by some that Rita was the heart of PATH. She nurtured it and kept it alive with her constant dedication to educating those seeking natural, non-toxic ways to health and well being. She will not only be remembered as an alternative health advocate but as a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many.
